Minister Fred L. Buckner was born and raised in Arkansas until age five, when he moved to California with his parents and three siblings. He earned his bachelor of theology from International Seminary in Florida; received his preaching license from Rev. Hiawatha T. Calhoun of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church (Mt. Zion MBC) in Bakersfield, California; and earned his educational administration MA from California State University. Minister Buckner served as a teacher, vice principal, and ultimately elementary school principal until he retired in 2008. He is now an associate minister and the Sunday school superintendent at Mt. Zion MBC, as well as a member of the Bakersfield City Schools Educational Foundation. Edna Buckner is married to Fred and coauthor of his collection of sermons, Words for the Soul. She manages the Mt. Zion MBC audio-visual presentations and church service bulletin. She is from the Republic of the Philippines; got her bachelor of science in commerce, major in accounting, and master in public administration from the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, Bacolod City. She served the City of Victorias, Negros Occidental, Philippines, as a personnel clerk, a public information officer, and lastly as city budget officer until she migrated to the United States in 2010.
